Spencer, Idaho has an Opal Mines and an RV park. We camped here and rode atv down the gravel road to Targee National Forest, where you will find marked trails, riding up to mountain tops to 8,000ft elevation. There were several trails in this area. You can buy a permit and sift thru their opal pit mine. You can keep the opals you find or buy some in their store. 
We also rode at White Knob,.
