We headed west, from our camp site, Nugget Creek, along the St. Joe River, on Hwy 50, 4 miles to Prospector creek, one of the few river crossings to the south. We climbed in elevation, enjoying the views. There were some fs roads off the main 752 road.
We kept heading up, past a logging operation. Wow, these guys work on the side of a mountain! We turned off on a open grassy road to the left- Which kept following the contour's of the mountain. Then we came out on a main gravel road , where we saw 7 elk on the hillside. We continued to the fork, turning Left, up hill, (no sign) where the fire tower is at Middle Sister Peak at elevation of 6986 ft.
After climbing the tower, we went down to Dismal Lake, which is very beautiful. Saw Mammoth Springs campground- well it is actually 1 picnic table in the woods, with no parking. Then we returned down fs rd. 509 – Bull Creek to highway 50, and back home again. There were numerous side roads to explore, but it was gettin late. It was a great ride seeing mountain hillsides, gravel roads draped across the mountains like ribbon. Wild flowers were full bloom, red, white, blues.
